Well, we moved here knowing I could get a teaching job easily. I did. But, what a difference from up north. Much longer hours, including breakfast & bus duty and no planning time. I used to go to work at 6:40, kids came at 7:45, and left at 2:30 and I left at 3:30. I had an hour before and after school uninterrupted to do paperwork, write IEPS, plan, so there wasnt so much to do at home. I also had a 45 minute lunch. Don't get me wrong, I still brought work home, but not like this. My take home pay is 50% of what it was in the midwest and the hours I am at work I am doing duties, extra paperwork, etc. There are 2 less people doing special ed paperwork, testing, etc than I am used to, so a lot more for the teachers to do. We get a lousy 30 minutes for lunch if we're lucky, no planning time, and many more hours of work at night. Some teachers get no lunch break. It's to the point that my kids, including one with considerable special needs, are suffering. My husband is a chef, so he has to work nights and weekends. My nights and weekends since we've moved are spent working-often until 11 or 12 at night, and I dont get home until after 5 now, so the kids are coming home alone and then have to wait much longer for dinner, homework help, etc. I am worn out and feel guilty.

I've been exploring other options for income where I don't have to be gone from 7:30 AM until after 5PM and then have all of the paperwork to do nights and weekends. In college, I delivered papers, waited tables, and cleaned houses. These are all sounding more appealing than my 11-12 hour work days. I ebay right now for extra money since my pay is so low, but only make about 20,000/year.

I am thinking I could supplement with house cleaning, substitute teaching, tutoring maybe an hour per night or on Saturdays for a couple hours, and more ebay. My husband says he doesnt think I can make enough. Does anyone do these types of things and make any money? Is there a high need in this area? My goal is to be able to take the kids to school and be home for them after school and not have hours of work in the evenings.
I know the people on this forum are brutally honest, so let me hear it-prefer to hear from people with unconventional income and not opinions on what people think-and NO, I DO NOT want to ever move back. I love it here, my kids love it here-they just want Mom back.

My sister is a teacher here too and just wrapped up a tutoring stint that lasted about 2 months. The problem? When do kids need to be tutored? That's right, after school and weekends. Now, if that's ALL you're doing, or doing it with another side job, maybe that won't bother you - but it doesn't really solve the problem of you being there for your kids after school and evenings.

If you really don't want to teach, why not looking into getting re-trained in something else? In the long run, it would probably be worth it. Or see if you can transfer to a school with an opening in kindy or 1st grade. It really galls my sister that she's evaluated on school testing, which doesn't even start till 3rd grade. She's always saying "what's my incentive for not asking for a transfer to a lower grade?!"

I'm glad you guys like it here - I think that solves half your problem, because at least that's not on the table as an issue, KWIM? Good luck with whatever you decide.

Are you looking to supplement the teaching or potentially a new path? Have you considered working as a front desk employee for a dental practice? Working hours will typically be 8-5 and there wouldn't be any take home work. You would probably be able to find an office to hire you without any dental experience but it may take some more time. Both of my front desk employees had zero dental experience. I tend to hire on attitude, attention to detail, education, phone/verbal skills- the things you can't teach/train. Being a teacher you'd have the skills needed- it just may take some time to find an office willing to train you from the start.

Job action. I'm utterly amazed at the CR-AP employees will accept in NC.
What does your union say/do about this?

Something other than teaching. Good luck.

What about something online like picking up writing tasks ect... on Mturk ? I haven't been on there in a long time but I recall doing some of those in the past.

Yes, I know that tutoring would be after school, but I thought maybe if I only did maybe one hour/night and a couple hours on Saturday before DH leaves for work, I'd still have more time for my kids than I do now.

A teacher I work with makes more tutoring than teaching!
I am teaching special ed, and the problem is that where I taught before, kids being referred for sped were tested by 2 people who then held a meeting to determine placement. Here, there is a referral meeting, which I have to write, then we have to take the info from the school psych and write the initial IEP (both take a lot of extra time and were done by a whole different department where I am from) then we have re-evals that I have to do (more hours of paperwork). We just had a kindergarten teacher go into something else because even that young she was being pressured to push the kids to know so much that the pressure was awful, at that age!
We even have Case 21 testing in 2nd grade now. Even if I did do regular ed, it still would be the 9 hour days and work after work hours. I think I'm just ready for a change. I didnt go to college for 7 years to serve breakfast and stand in the rain for 45 minutes opening car doors or walking to busses.

I'm not even sure what I'd be retrained in. I'm still paying student loans from undergrad and grad school! I LOVE my ebay side job, I am just not sure I could make it profitable enough without some side things. And I HATE not being home until after 5. With ebay or side jobs, I'd be home when they got here! Yes, at least we're happy here! It makes the struggles worth it!

Union-that is a joke, right?
I didn't realize what good a union was up north, but now I see. They couldnt force me to come in early to serve breakfast, clear tables, etc and stay late until busses showed up. AND, I had my 45 minute lunch every day. The things I took for granted!

If I didn't want so badly to be home when the kids got home after school, that wouldnt be bad. My son has Down syndrome, is in kindergarten, and his older sisters are taking care of him until I get home every day. He needs to work on social and academic skills daily and he's getting the short end of the deal here. I took such a paycut to come here, there is no money left for childcare, even for an hour/night.

That would be something I'd be interested in. I would like to work my own hours and be home when I need to be for the kids. I'll look into that. Thanks! I never know which work at home things I find online are legitimate.
